Fed: Vote for the Fuglies
By Vera Devai
BRISBANE, April 14 AAP - Logies move over.
It's the second year of the Fuglies - the alternative to the best-known of Australian TV awards.
Recognising the worst Australian television has had to offer in the past 12 months, the TV Fugly Awards today began taking votes over the internet.
This year's Fuglies were kicked off with a vote cast by ABC presenter Joanne Shoebridgefrom the rural affairs program Landline.
Ms Shoebridge voted ex-pat Aussie Simon Baker (The Guardian) as the Spunkiest MaleTV Personality and Chris Bath from Channel 7s Sunday Sunrise as the Most Under AcknowledgedTV Personality.
In 2002, Landline was recognised in one of the more positive categories when votersdetermined it the Most Under Acknowledged Television Show.
But not all the categories are so kind, with "Least Talented TV Personality TurnedPop Star" and "Australian Celebrity Who You Would have rather seen in the Celebrity BigBrother" being added to the list this year.
"The awards are not meant to be taken too seriously" said TV Fugly Awards creator Anthony Dever.
"It's all done for a bit of a laugh. I don't want to put anyone out of a job.
"Although, I do feel that some of the awful stuff that appears on television needsto be recognised."
Mr Dever said he created the awards to give people an alternative to the Logies.
"You don't have to buy a magazine to vote, voters are not restricted by selected pre-nomineesand can vote for whoever they want and we have categories that make you laugh," Mr Deversaid.
Notable "winners" from last year's awards included Home and Away for Worst TV Show,Phil Gould as the Most Biased Sporting Commentator and Eddie McGuire as the Most OverexposedTV Personality.
2003 Fugly Awards voting at www.fugly.com.au closes at midnight May 7 with the finalresults posted at that site on May 9, two days before the official Logie Awards ceremony.
"Winners" are then sent their authentic paper certificate to commemorate the achievementof being part of Australian television history.
