3 British Soldiers Killed in Iraq Attack

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ Three British soldiers were killed and one seriously wounded Saturday during a guerrilla attack in the southern Iraqi port city of Basra. To the north, American forces reported killing two Iraqi Turkomen who opened fire when the U.S. soldiers arrived to put down an ethnic clash in the city of Tuz Kharmato. In Baghdad, meanwhile, some U.N. staff returned to work in tents set up at the battered Canal Hotel compound. Investigators and soldiers searched piles of debris there for human remains and clues in the deadly suicide truck bombing Tuesday that killed at least 23 people, including the top U.N. envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello.

Palestinians Try to Halt Militant Attacks

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) _ Facing a fresh storm of violence, Palestinian leaders said Saturday they would try to broker a new halt to attacks by Islamic and other extremist groups and urged Israel to stop killing top militants. Chances for a new cease-fire looked dim, however, and top Palestinian officials said privately they were unable to stop what looked set to be an all-out war between Israel and Palestinian militants.

Alabama Justice Suspended Over Monument

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) _ Alabama's chief justice has been suspended for refusing to obey a federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the rotunda of the state judicial building. Roy Moore was automatically suspended with pay Friday when the nine-member Judicial Inquiry Commission referred an ethics complaint against him to the Court of the Judiciary, which holds trial-like proceedings and can discipline and remove judges.

Calif. Recall Support Waning, Poll Says

SAN DIEGO (AP) _ California voters are losing their thirst for recalling Gov. Gray Davis, according to a new poll released amid signs that both Democrats and Republicans are moving to throw support behind their respective front runners. The Los Angeles Times poll Friday showed half of likely voters support throwing Davis out of office, while 45 percent are opposed. Just 4 percent are undecided. The poll of 801 likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Thousands Flee Toward Liberian Capital

COTTON TREE, Liberia (AP) _ Thousands of panicked refugees streamed toward Monrovia from the southeast on Saturday, fleeing artillery explosions and gunfire that West African peacekeepers suggested came from clashes between the government's own militias after Liberia's peace deal. The exodus filled the road leading from Buchanan, a southern rebel-held port city.

1 Killed, 2 Missing in Ky. Flash Flooding

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) _ Search dogs scoured the banks of a creek into Saturday morning for a woman and a girl who were swept into the water when a storm-triggered flash flood uprooted their home. A boy, believed to be 5 or 6 years old, had also been in the house and was found dead about 6 p.m. Friday along Stony Creek, a tributary of the Kentucky River, said Mike Harrod, Franklin County coroner.

National Guard Set to Fight Oregon Fires

SISTERS, Ore. (AP) _ National Guard troops were ready to help firefighters Saturday in their battle against wildfires burning in a national forest and threatening a tiny mountain community. Gov. Ted Kulongoski declared a state of emergency Friday allowing the troops to help firefighters.

Experts Avert Threatened Internet Attack

NEW YORK (AP) _ Security experts managed to avert a threatened Internet attack, while FBI agents subpoenaed an Arizona company for clues to the origins of a fast-spreading computer virus that slowed e-mail systems worldwide this week. The virus, the "F" variant of "Sobig," contained instructions to launch an attack Friday afternoon, but experts were able to identify and block most of the key computers needed as accomplices.

Fox's Bid to Block Franken Book Is Denied

NEW YORK (AP) _ Calling it an easy case, a judge rejected Fox News Channel's bid to block liberal humorist Al Franken's new book, whose cover mocks the Fox slogan "fair and balanced." U.S. District Judge Denny Chin said the book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right," is a parody protected by the First Amendment.

Pujols' Hitting Streak Ends As Cards Lose

Jim Thome hit two more homers against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-4 road victory. St. Louis' Albert Pujols went 0-for-5 to end his 30-game hitting streak. Pujols had missed four games with flulike symptoms that began to drain him last Sunday _ and also served a two-game suspension during that time.
