Police launched a criminal inquiry into political donations to Britain's ruling Labour Party, threatening to undermine Prime Minister Gordon Brown's pledge of honest government and derail his efforts to distance himself from Tony Blair's tenure.
Police will investigate whether businessman David Abrahams broke the law when he gave Labour around 650,000 pounds (US$1.3 million, euro905,000) in the names of others _ seeking to dodge rules which require major donors to be named.
Britain's Electoral Commission said the case would be formally taken up by police Friday, raising the prospect of officers returning to the leader's Downing Street office.
