Vic: Man remanded over 19-year-old murder

MELBOURNE, Aug 4 AAP - A man charged with the murder 19 years ago of a security guard
in Melbourne's west appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court today.

Russell Laurence Arnott, 49, a rigger and scaffolder of St Vincents Place North, Albert
Park, was yesterday charged with the murder of security guard Daniel John Zigante in Altona
North in 1985.

Mr Zigante's body was found behind the K-Mart building at the Altona Gate shopping
centre early on March 3, 1985, with a bullet wound in the back.

Arnott's lawyer Amanda Hurst today told the court her client had a history of mental
illness and required medication.

Arnott did not apply for bail and was not required to enter a plea.

Magistrate Paul Smith remanded Arnott in custody to re-appear in the Melbourne Magistrates
Court on October 27 and ordered that he be attended by a mental health nurse.
